Farming the wind
Secondary foci: Reflective practice, DTaAfL,
How was it used?
As part of our Year 6 KS2 work in Geography, I wanted my pupils to use problem-solving and decision-making skills to address issues ‘in the news’ – in this case, the creation of wind farms to help future energy needs.
I found the ‘Farming the Wind’ resource on NGfL Cymru which gave me my initial stimulus but, for my children, I wanted to extend the resource. I created additional activities in SMART Notebook to support the original resource.
I used SMARTBoard tools (like the camera tools) to capture worksheet detail in order to move some activities away from paper and onto my IWB for more group discussion.
Impact and Outcomes
- This activity gave my class an excellent opportunity to start exploring issues facing people in Wales today.
- The work contributed towards the development of critical thinking skills.
- This activity gave ample opportunity to use what they had learnt to reflect on situations in their part of Wales.

Lesson Learnt
On reflection, I might extend this activity by finding photos of other actual or proposed locations. I can then split the class into groups and give each one a location to assess / approve/ promote. This would lead to an interesting debate!
