Romans for a day

Outline of the activity
The children went on a visit to the Roman ruins of Isca in Caerleon, S. Wales as part of their History work. They wrote up their experiences and highlighted words that they felt would benefit the reader if they were put into a glossary.

Skills Covered
The children wrote and edited an account of a visit using the computer. Using IT skills of copy, paste and changing font/colour/style the children added a glossary of terms using reference books to carry out the research.

Rationale
The children had to write accounts of visits and use a glossary as part of their Literacy work. For IT, they had been practicing changing font style, colour, size, using bold and italic and for this task they were taught to copy and paste. This activity encouraged the children to apply their IT skills to the Literacy task and research information on their History

Result
The finished written accounts were put into a class book. Each account had a glossary of terms to help the reader. The book was read by the class and passed onto another class to read. Some of the accounts were e-mailed to a link school in Southern Ireland.
