Outline of the activity
The children were being introduced to using spreadsheets and working with basic functions. The teacher decided that the subject would be a survey of shoe sizes in the class. Pupils collated the information, entered it into the spreadsheet and produced a graph.
Skills Covered
The children learned how to input information into the cells and how to alter the width of the rows and columns. They used the graphing facility and then positioned the graph on the correct part of the spreadsheet. The children also used the bold, italic and underline function to edit headings.
Rationale
The teacher wanted to use spreadsheets but needed a context to allow the children to use the spreadsheet in a way which was relevant to them.
Result
Bar charts were drawn to show the results of the investigation.
