Spellings into sentences
Outline of the activity
Children write sentences putting their weekly spelling words into their correct context. Pupils use a PowerPoint template, enter their sentences and choose appropriate clipart from the Internet.
Skills Covered
Word and sentence level activities are combined. Children must apply contextual knowledge of words and construct functioning and appropriate sentences. Templates are used for this activity but the children must still enter and modify text. The clipart is selected and downloaded from the Internet by the children (although it could be done from CD or a local hard drive).
Rationale
Pupils’ word level spelling activities are reinforced and extended into sentence level work. A template is used to accelerate the activity so that it fits easily within a literacy session. The process can be repeated/reused as new words are targeted.
Result
Children practise their word level spelling work in context. The activity is very quick and can be reused and extended to include more difficult sentence level tasks e.g the use of homonyms, prefixes and suffixes and tenses.
